PCA Team win the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute’s “Gas Turbine Award”

09 May 2024

Mick Casey and Chris Robinson of PCA Engineers Limited have won the prestigious ASME International Gas Turbine Institute’s Gas Turbine Award for the paper they submitted to the 2022 ASME Turbo Conference in Rotterdam (Paper GT2022-79368).

The Gas Turbine Award is given in recognition of an outstanding individual contribution to the literature of gas turbines. The PCA Engineers team paper was selected from among the 28 IGTI Best Papers of 2022 covering all the technical areas of the conference. The award will be presented at the ASME Turbo Expo Conference on Tuesday June 25, 2024, at the ExCel Convention Centre, London, England.

The paper demonstrates important aspects of the exit velocity triangle of a radial compressor impeller in the form of a simple diagram. The diagram presents a useful design guideline, aids understanding of the exit velocity triangle of impeller designs across many different applications and identifies many aspects of the matching between the impeller and the diffuser. The diagram gives engineers an intuitive way of examining CFD and experimental performance data so that details of the exit velocity triangle can be more easily interpreted and hence lead to more informed design choices.

The paper has also been published in the ASME Journal of Turbomachinery:

Casey, M. and Robinson, C. (2023). "Some Properties of the Exit Velocity Triangle of a Radial Compressor Impeller." ASME. J. Turbomach. May 2023; 145(5): 051007. doi.org/10.1115/1.4056088.

The Gas Turbine Award has been presented each year since 1964 and the list of former winners includes many of the most revered names in the history of the turbomachinery industry.

Robinson said: “We are honoured to accept the award, it reflects well on PCA Engineers, and it is very fitting that it highlights Casey’s extensive contribution via publications in this area.”

PCA will be manning Booth #310 at the Turbo 2024 conference in the ExCeL Centre, London: June 25th to 27th. We look forward to meeting you there.
